Petra preserves the monumental rock-cut architecture and urban remains of the Nabataean kingdom in southern Jordan. Its tombs, temples, water systems, and desert setting make it one of the most important archaeological destinations in the biblical world and a major stop for understanding the history of Edom, Nabataea, and the lands east of the Jordan.
